Marlborough Sounds has a pretty special endemic, the King Shag , a species that isn’t just endemic to New Zealand but endemic to just the Sounds. This trip was to rectify that.

As you know, I started to bird from a canoe, exploring the Danube backwaters in Belgrade, Serbia. It is a fascinating world of swampy forests of willow and poplar, inhabited by Black Storks , White-tailed Eagles , Eastern Olivaceous and Icterine Warblers (above), among more than 200 other species. The majority are clearly Mallards , followed by Garganeys , with one and possibly more Green-winged Teals , also Ferruginous Ducks … Surprises among them are one Common Shelduck , a species that most likely breeds some 15 mi from here (and my first shelduck of the year) and an even greater surprise: two Eurasian Wigeons. and one ad.).

On the first trip in 2012 we used public transport to get there and the train conveniently gets you to Macarthur Square shopping centre and you can then get a bus that drops you right at the entrance to the park. You can easily get there via public transport by taking the train to Lara from either Geelong or Melbourne if you do not have access to a vehicle. In total, there are eight species of hornbills in Borneo – the best place to see them seems to be the Kinabatagan River area (also known as Sukau). Another item they feed on is hunting edible bird nest swiftlets, which are quite common in edible swiftlet houses in Sabah, Malaysia ( source ).

Taxi v SMRT – The SMRT is the excellent, clean, safe, reliable, cheap transport system of Singapore. My personal list for Paser Ris runs to 75 birds over 15 visits that average out at around 25 species per outing.

Last year, I compiled a subjective list of the Top 25 National Wildlife Refuges for Birding. According to eBird , 340 species have been observed at the “ Hagerman NWR ” hotspot, which ranks as No. The overall refuge , which includes all of its hotspots, has 344 species. But when I visited, the birds didn’t seem to mind.

The weather in Karratha was very hot during our visit with daytime temperatures of 38c (100f) and the predominant birds in the township were Little Corella , Crested Pigeons and Silver Gulls. Karratha is a town built on industry and first impressions do not give you particularly high hopes for any good birding areas.

The Red Wattlebird, Spotted Doves and Common Mynas are the most common birds on this trail. It doesn’t take long and you are right on the coast and I have walked north in the past to follow the trail to Westgate Park , but on this occasion I once again set off to the south.
