Gullmania in Costa Rica

They come here knowing that although the official bird list for Costa Rica is replete with everything from Bonaparte’s Gull to Gray-hooded Gull and Least Tern , if they do any amount of gull watching, they’ll be lucky if they see anything more than Laughing Gulls. Marilen and I have made a couple trips to see the birds.

Chongming Island in winter

Located right where the Yangtze River enters the sea (and dividing it into two parts), it is mostly flat farmland. Population density is far lower than in most parts of the city, and public transportation is limited – probably bad news for the people living on the island, but good news for the birds. Again, very shy birds.

It does not completely solve the problem, because animals transport the burrs, but it will hopefully slow the spread. Although you now have to stay on the new stone chip parking area it has been greatly beneficial to the bird-life.
