I remember my first Bald Eagle so vividly. I dragged the guy I had just started seeing (reader, I married him) on a frosty February morning to an eagle walk at Croton Point Park (Croton-on-Hudson, NY). It was a pretty frigid winter that year, and there were ice floes, which is why so many eagles were appearing so far south.

After we took possession of an injured and weakened Golden Eagle from the vast desert area of eastern Utah, it became clear that the compound fracture of the tibiotarsus was the result of a steel-jaw trap. This bird was lucky to be found and rescued by a Good Samaritan in this remote area. This was going to be a tough case.

Superficially similar but unrelated to New World condors, it is huge, more pterodactyl-like than bird-like. But it’s a huge bird. Over the years I’ve seen a variety of open-country birds there, including Bobolinks , Vesper Sparrow , and American Kestrel. Over the years birding Willow Lake I had added nearly eighty eBird checklists at the preserve and netted myself 127 species, good for number two on the eBird hotspot list. I really hope so.

There’s a ( Eurasian) Blue Tit ( Cyanistes caeruleus ) flitting around some flowers and butterflies, while what is likely another European member of the family Paridae – possibly either a Willow Tit ( Poecile montanus ) or Marsh Tit ( Poecile palustris ) – seems to alight on the letter “T” in “Natura”. Good birding and happy drinking!

I’ve said it before, but this large raptor with the massive, eagle-like bill is not a Hawk or Eagle , but a genetic Falcon. There were, of course, many other birds seen that day. White-tailed Eagles normally take flight silently, yet, while checking some Common Starlings and hoping for Rosy Starlings , I heard a few noisy wing-beats, enough to turn and see a young eagle flying with a wing tag. To prove more how young and inexperienced it was, the eagle even landed on the ground a mere 15 metres behind my car.

This pair of birds, which we presume to be the exact same pair, has been laying eggs in this area since 2008. The eggs hatched out around 20th June after 28 days of incubation and the Pied Oystercatcher family were soon on the move. This moves the family closer to a reef that gets exposed on low tides and better feeding opportunities.

Roebuck Bay is a well-known location for bird-watching around Broome. At the farthest point of Roebuck Bay to the south there is often a flock of Pied Oystercatchers that number several hundred birds. The area is used as a hunting ground for large raptors including the White-bellied Sea-Eagle and Brahminy Kite.

The tail is much shorter and not wedged like the Wedge-tailed Eagle. They may well have all been from the same family.
