A Year of Birding in Costa Rica- Highlights and a Few Birds Missed

Missing was Great Black-Hawk , missing on account of not spending enough time looking in the right places and the species having undergone serious decline in Costa Rica over the past 20 years. I looked in some of the right places but failed to connect. I also failed to see a Pearl Kite , maybe one of my biggest misses of the year.

Highlights from the 2022 Arenal Christmas Count in Costa Rica

One such event is the bird count at Arenal, a day typically replete with varying degrees of rain. This is a mini event replete with coffee, pastries, and a few vendors selling super cool bird art, shirts, earrings, and posters. These were some of the highlights. A few more Pied Oystercatchers start to breed

They were successful last year at raising one of the chicks, which is a rare event in Broome. It is only early in the breeding season here right now, but we always hope for the best with all of our breeding attempts along our coastline. For these two pairs of Pied Oystercatchers the incubating always is the easy part of breeding.

They have arrived in large numbers this time, but as with all of these bird species that arrive during flood events we don’t know where they came from. This goanna below is quietly hanging out beside the highway and in the background on the right you can observe a rather vocal Red-backed Fairywren. Goanna in a tree.

I can attempt to describe the exhilarating chain of events which unfolds each time a tropicbird or booby runs the gauntlet of marauding frigatebirds – but you can see it for yourself in this clip aired by the BBC for the series Life. A Red-billed Tropicbird glides over the pounding surf off Little Tobago.
