This year one pair of Pied Oystercatchers has once again proven to be able to raise young. They are one of the older pairs and they have raised several young over the years, but only ever one has been fledged each year. They are the only pair to consistently lay three eggs and all other pairs along the coast only lay two eggs.

Stark, a white Gyrfalcon , is a falconry bird born and raised. Given the horrible consequences of irresponsible falconry for birds, it’s definitely a plus to see the text emphasize this. Still, she’s nearly more falconry bird than 13-year-old Karma (yes, she has hippy parents) can handle at the book’s opening.

The wok of an alarmed Black-crowned Night-Heron and the thin whistle of a Yellow-breasted Flycatcher made me stop and realize it was definitely lining up to be a rather birdy morning. I’d excitedly raise my binoculars to only barely make out that bright yellow eye that screamed ‘Least Grebe’ uncomfortably loud.

While we had been waiting one of the young had raised itself up and let its waste drop outside the nest. The female Magpie-lark gave each of the young some food, but one particular bird was definitely keen to take the most food that it could. She waited for a moment and flew in towards the nest. The first snipe I ever saw was on Tobago, a definite Wilson’s Snipe. Such was the unlikeliness of a definitive ID. This is a hefty book, 560 pages long and dimensions of 6.3 inches, which makes it just a little too large to be a field guide. The design focuses attention on the photographs.

The Marabu Stork definitely has a face that only a mother could love. Each of these ‘families’ consists of a single mating pair and 1-5 ‘helpers’ who assist in raising the young.
