A new bower in Cygnet Park-Broome

The header photo is the new Great Bowerbirds ‘ bower and the photos below show the contents. Of course there is always something interesting about bowers wherever they are, but especially amongst human habitation. Cygnet Park continues to be a good location for observing Olive-backed Orioles and many other bird species.

Birding Yancheng, Jiangsu

While these birds are very much liked by Chinese birders, the species could unfortunately not be named the National Bird of China as the Latin species name of the bird is Grus Japonicus. From my home in Shanghai, it is about a four-hour drive to the North to Yancheng, a place to look for Red-crowned Cranes in winter.

A Near Conjunction

Cocoa Woodcreepers are the largest species of woodcreeper in T&T, and they have a proportionately massive bill. As if to stamp its approval on the habitat alteration, a Pale-breasted Spinetail voiced its content with the human disturbance. And so, we continued. Birding Bryant Park

Sadly, the bird had flown the coop late yesterday afternoon so I had to content myself with less yellow birds. Catbirds seem very quick to adapt to the reality of foraging in busy Bryant Park, fearlessly approaching humans while foraging and often eating whatever is being fed to the House Sparrows and Rock Pigeons.

The Cattle Egret Expansion

When you think of invasives, you think of the birds that have been helped by human beings to get where they are, such as House Sparrow or European Starling. Other species have certainly expanded their ranges, but never in such a rapid and global scale. Cattle Egret has been introduced by humans to Hawaii and the Seychelles.

Hummingbirds at Catarata del Toro, Costa Rica

Fortunately, like most birders, we like hummingbirds, and having eight species buzzing around was very very nice. I’m just glad that human males aren’t expected to outshine human females. No one really knows what they actually are but they seem content just being Bananaquits. Violet Sabrewings are amazing.
