Don’t Ignore the Barnacles – they’re Real Birds

10,000 Birds

Here in Suffolk we now have impressive wintering flocks of Barnacle Geese, often numbering 1000 birds or more. Vagrancy in Birds: A Book Review

10,000 Birds

This chapter also covers vagrancy in social migrants, and why vagrancy is common in ‘obligate social navigators’ like geese and cranes, a thought which got me thinking of all the times I’ve searched for one Barnacle Goose amidst hundreds of Canada Geese. Next time, I’ll know why.

Hilbre, the Sometimes Island

10,000 Birds

The island is something of a sometimes island, a collection of rocks with a smattering of houses that is sometimes an island among the sandy expanses of the silted up estuary and sometimes actually an island in the Irish Sea. Brent Geese, with Wales behind. Hilbre looking north towards Liverpool.
