I submitted five checklists from four different locations yielding 44 species. Lema Ranch has several ponds and is always a great spot for waterfowl but I was surprised to find four Snow Geese on secluded pond! All in all, I tallied 44 species.

Like several of my favorite NWRs, this one was established as a haven for migratory birds, most notably waterfowl, during the bad old days when uncontrolled hunting and habitat loss had put the future of even species we now think of as common in doubt. A second pond held not only more of the same, but some American Coots and Canada Geese.

One website I found suggested a few others that may be true but I hadn’t encountered before, are young cranes actually called colts, or falcons eyas?

I’m not sure what the collective noun for a group of petrels is, but the vets and wildlife carers of New Zealand might be forgiven for thinking that it might be a wreck after this week. This is the largest species of prion and perhaps the one that best suits the alternative name whalebird.

During this time, the fish trapped in the shrinking pools of water attract hordes of herons, egrets, storks, and other wetland species. The star of such huge concentrations is the massive Jabiru , towering over a diverse collection of South American waterbirds such as Sunbittern , Plumbeous Ibis , and Southern Screamer.

It is always hard to grasp the actual size of a bird until you literally have it in your hand and we collected the specimen and gave it to the Spurn Bird Observatory for their records. They have been recording bird species numbers and banding/ringing birds for many years with the initial roll call of bird species starting in 1938.

In early August this year, I saw 77 species here (69 on the lake, plus 8 more in the surrounding areas) but barely more than a thousand individuals. At first I dismissed them for some hybrid geese, until I recognized their JIZZ. Spring (migrants and breeding species) and winter (wintering waterbirds). Eurasian Spoonbills.

The Winter Gull Survey (WinGS) will run over the winters of 2023/24 and 2024/25 to collect updated information on the numbers and distributions of these wintering gulls in the UK, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. Not really a hardship, but it made the count less enjoyable. I arrived, equipped with my telescope, long before dusk.

Stumpy Duck is part of Trillium’s Small Bird Series, a collection of lighter, lower-alcohol beers brewed for summer, with each can sparingly decorated with a different bird in miniature. It’s the least I can do for a species that’s caused me almost no identification angst over the years. Not exactly a small bird.

There are excellent birding opportunities along the highway throughout the year and the area still remains flooded from the rains over our Wet Season and it has been a breeding site for several species of birds. All three species of Ibis were present with Glossy Ibis far outnumbering the Straw-necked Ibis and Australian White Ibis.

We returned to Lake Argyle before heading into town and the male Great Bowerbirds still had a bower in a very similar spot to last year with a similar collection of rocks and bones.
