Within 140 ac / 60 ha of Rancho Naturalista’s Reserve, there are 500 bird species – or 55% of the nation’s total! While I already visited Costa Rica once, I do not feel overly-confident with its birds. And Verbena attracts another specialty bird and a regional endemic (from Honduras to Panama), the Snowcap.

Around here, it’s the Caribbean Sea and that’s also why we bird the Caribbean slope, we look for macaws, toucans, and Great Potoos in the Caribbean lowlands. Many of the birds were beautiful, exciting tropical bird species, some, I dare say, downright cool. How could this amazing bird not be cool! Spectacular.

I have been a wild bird rehabilitator for 25 years. I have received countless numbers of wild birds mangled and/or killed by outdoor/feral cats, such as the Orange-crowned Warbler pictured here. I look at these birds, and am enraged by how cruel and callous human beings can be. Is it the fault of the cats?

In the last few months, Downy Woodpecker s and squirrels have added some holes to the cedar siding of the building. When people ask me what the best thing they can do to avoid birds pecking holes in cedar siding, my answer is, “Get aluminum siding.” The sparrows will go as far to kill the original makers of the cavity.

Seeing as Saugerties is the northernmost town in Ulster County and the home of the southern half of the Great Vly, I couldn’t resist getting there on both Saturday morning and Sunday morning to see if I could track down bitterns, rails, and other marsh birds. I heard a Pileated Woodpecker at the Great Vly I did not see one there.

The birding is not exceptional, but you can easily see some of Singapore’s and South-east Asia’s more common species and it does throw up the occasional jewel. Sometimes I feel a bit like this about winter birding on Shanghai’s Tianmashan hill. The call of this bulbul seems quite similar to that of the Collared Finchbill to me, though given that I grew up listening to alternative and independent music rather than to bird song, this is not a very meaningful observation.
