Acorn Woodpeckers Drinking Sugar Water?

You probably know that I live where we have many, many woodpeckers. One of the most abundant woodpeckers in Oak Run , where I live, is the Acorn Woodpecker ( Melanerpes formicivorus ). During all these years I have never had woodpeckers of any species feeding at my hummingbird feeders, so I found this very odd.

Alabama Man Pleads Guilty to Killing Protected Birds

Alexander Alvarez of Atmore, Alabama, has pled guilty to “killing migratory birds and selling the feathers on the black market” in a killing spree that dates back to 2006. It’s nice to see laws against killing birds and selling their feathers enforced.

Kerkini in Winter

In the UK we have a mere three resident woodpeckers, but in the vicinity of Kerkini it’s not difficult to find all of Europe’s peckers except the Three-toed. One year we found an impressively big calidus Peregrine, feeding on a Wigeon that it had killed. I’ve only found one once, but it was a delightfully confiding bird.

What’s in a Name?

It notes that there are around 1,000 people who have had birds named after them, but no fewer than three of them – Frank Linsly James, Eugenio Prince Ruspoli and Johan August Wahlberg – were killed by elephants, not a common form of death. Collecting birds was clearly a dangerous pastime.

This was where I set up my bird feeders, just one at first, then expanding as everyone expressed delight in seeing the Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Downy Woodpeckers. The resident fashion critic of eBird is not very impressed with the Orange-backed Woodpecker , stating that it is “dressed all in patchwork” It has one of the more stupid-sounding genus names – Reinwardtipicus, which is made up of the name of Dutch naturalist Prof. Lucky him, right? Though he ended up dead anyway.

Assuming that the (North American) Imperial Woodpecker and the Ivory-billed Woodpecker are both extinct, the Great Slaty Woodpecker is the largest woodpecker species alive. One would think that for a species as common in Europe as the Grey-headed Woodpecker , the HBW would spend some effort to update the species entry.
