The white feathers of Snowy Owls allow you to see the blood from their most recent kills still staining their plumage, which is about as metal as any wild animal is likely to get. But beyond their killing ways Snowy Owls genuinely inspire non-birders to become birders. The darned things are so dumb that they tend to land on birders.

Just when a manakin feels safe it has to deal with the possibility of being killed by a pint-sized, voracious thing with needle-sharp talons. Chestnut-colored Woodpecker. Several species of woodpeckers occur in this birdy part of Costa Rica. One of those few is the Chestnut-colored Woodpecker.

I know these winds had a lot of the birds all settled in, and not moving much, but right off the bat, I got a new Lifer, in a pair of Nuttall’s Woodpeckers. Here is my new Nuttall’s Woodpecker. The new lifers are the Nuttall’s Woodpecker, Lincoln Sparrow, Oak Titmouse , and the Wrentit! The 11th of February.

Some animals are injured and killed by wildfires. A fire might kill weak birds or, depending on the time of year, claim nestlings. Vicki states that fire benefits several bird species, like the Black-backed Woodpecker which feeds off the bark and wood-boring beetles that lay eggs in the charred trees.

Every other year or so, we experience the lightest of frosts, nothing killing, and our warmest temperatures (in the 80s and 90s) occur in late spring. Golden-fronted Woodpeckers apparently like blackberries, too. This year, that pair of Golden-fronted Woodpeckers are big customers as well. One of our birdiest plants.

A Lineated Woodpecker banged its head against a dry branch. We counted seven of these alluring birds while I killed my camera battery. Before I had even cut the engine I caught a White-bearded Manakin staring. Violaceous Euphonias , Bay-headed Tanagers and Bananaquits fed on berries overhead. Bay-headed Tanagers. Turquoise Tanager.

It might not look frightening to a birder but if we could ask pigeons, woodpeckers, and other birds how they felt abut the Bicolored Hawk, we would see their eyes go wide with fear and their feathers tremble. This Black-cheeked Woodpecker was shot right off the upper patio off our room. After bashing it on a branch to kill it, it did finally get it swallowed. The colors are so reflective that no matter what angle to took, they seemed almost as if they were a bad photo-shop job. This Rufous-tailed Jacana was found in the park with Geiner.

In the last few months, Downy Woodpecker s and squirrels have added some holes to the cedar siding of the building. The sparrows will go as far to kill the original makers of the cavity. When people ask me what the best thing they can do to avoid birds pecking holes in cedar siding, my answer is, “Get aluminum siding.”

I watched the bird for a full fifteen minutes as it foraged, chased a Lesser Goldfinch off its branch, was chased off a branch in turn by an Acorn Woodpecker , and chipped its now familiar chip the entire time.
