In August, we took a family trip to beautiful San Diego, seeing SeaWorld , LegoLand , and the San Diego Zoo. On August 13, 2022, I woke up early, snuck out of the hotel room without waking the rest of the family, and was at Seaforth Landing on Mission Bay by 7:00 a.m. This was much larger. Photos courtesy of Mosetlha Bush Camp A dusty-red road leads me through Marico bushveld deeper into the 750 square kilometers large wilderness of the Madikwe Game Reserve – the 4th largest reserve in South Africa, home to 350 bird and 66 mammal species, some 4 hours’ drive from Johannesburg. This past weekend I was disconnected from the internet, stuck in the woods without electricity, reduced to sleeping in a shelter made of fabric, and cooked meals over an open fire. That’s right, I, along with my family and some really good friends, was camping. We spent our days swimming, hiking, playing, and relaxing.

I have been working in the avian world for 25 years, but last summer I was out-birded by a 14-year-old girl. Each year Hog Island offers programs, taught by a stellar staff of naturalists and artists, to groups of all kinds (teenagers, adults, families). Most “bird-friendly”-labeled coffee is not bird-friendly at all.

My trip wasn’t touristy but I was able to sneak off late one afternoon and early one morning to do a bit of woodland birding at a location called Campbell Park. As you first walk down the paths (or even park) the dominant species is not a bird but Eastern Grey Kangaroos, and lots of them. Campbell Park, Canberra.

Not because of the birds but because of the flowers – the arid scrublands give way to a sea of flowers in the way many deserts can do from time to time, but here at least the rains are more predictable. I had previously visited the park in the summer, and while pretty it had been tricky to bird and I hadn’t hit a single target.

Quetzal is THE beloved, sacred bird of Guatemala and they do live there (and in southern Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama) BUT are more accessible in Costa Rica. If the birds are feeding along the road, you can just as easily find them yourself. Last weekend, I did that while guiding a trip for the Birding Club of Costa Rica.

Despite the vacant look in the eye of a Rock Pigeon , birds are not stupid…they cannot afford to be, or else they wouldn’t be here now. Where do Cook’s Petrels go to forage in the summer? It is these forests, and not the wetlands I have spoken of before , that hold the many endemics that make the Atherton Tableland such a rewarding place to go birding. Mt Hypipamee A beautiful forest part in the southern part of the Tableland, it is perhaps one of the most rewarding places to bird in the area.

brandy from the Dutch branden (“to burn, distill”), and mezcal from the Nahuatl mexcalli , meaning “oven-cooked agave”. So, it just might be that pisco – the beloved South American grape brandy contentiously claimed by both Peru and Chile – is the only spirit named after birds. Good birding and happy drinking!

My reasoning was thus, from this station I could hike through some apparently excellent Sydney Heathland before dropping down into some forest and the excellent birding in the centre of the park. The birding started straight away, a pair of Yellow-faced Honeyeaters , some Variagated Fairy-wrens and some Rainbow Lorikeets.
