At the end of October, my family flew to Florida for a multi-day road trip aimed at the beautiful springs. Water quality was good that day, and we could perfectly see the waving eelgrass, the freshwater fish species, the adorable turtles. We had an ambitious itinerary planned: six springs within eight Florida State Parks.

Two highlights of the walk back were a bright green Greater Green Leafbird and a Lesser Fish Eagle following the road above our heads. Fulvettas are also babblers, and the family, or families, are very well represented here – we also heard Short-tailed Babblers and Chestnut-backed Scimitar-babblers. Did I mention them?

Phoebes are proud members (at least they seem so) of the Family Tyrannidae , the tyrant flycatchers. Of the more than 400 tyrannids, as birds in this family are sometimes called, only three belong to the genus Sayornis , the phoebes. Black Phoebes eat bugs with the same gusto as any other flycatcher, but will also go after tiny fish.

These consist of Red-crowned Crane , Blakiston’s Fish-Owl , and Steller’s Sea-Eagle – all among the most massive and spectacular representatives of their families. Several more hours of driving on icy roads took us to Washi-no-yado, a traditional Japanese B&B near Rausu, the ‘place to be’ for Blakiston’s Fish-Owl.

While I don’t have a lot of experience with tropical terns, I believe that narrows it down to Sandwich Tern ( Thalasseus sandvicensis ), a bird that – while still quite rare in the Northeast – seems to be occurring with greater frequency , along with an increasingly northward incursion of Royal Terns ( Thalasseus maximus ).

Large picnic pavilions border one side, and while I was there the largest was commandeered by a family party. While I enjoyed the view of alligators and Double-crested Cormorants from the nearby fishing pier, I quickly walked away to distance myself from the blasting country music. As the national bird of Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, the African Fish Eagle is usually very busy whenever it stays in these countries, giving speeches, opening shopping centers, etc. While hoopoes are in their own family, DNA studies suggest that the hoopoe diverged from hornbills, and the wood-hoopoes and scimitarbills from the hoopoe.

We toured the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre after dark, and we did it by foot in a group that was just my family and a guide. It was the perfect experience, the guide had astonishing eyes and found things we would have passed over if we had been alone. Sepilok was the first, and to my mind probably the best.

Furthermore we have another very special stork-like bird, the regal Shoebill , previously known as the Whale-headed Stork but now placed in its own family. Ethiopia’s Rift Valley lakes such as Lake Ziway and Awassa are famous for the gangs of Marabous that hang around the fish markets and allow close approach in the hope of a smelly handout.

Now that Fish Crows ( Corvus ossifragus ) have established themselves as year-round residents of the Hudson Valley, we get a little more corvid variety, but even they ceased to qualify as rare birds some time ago.

The lodge, at around 1300 meters, marks the beginning of the birding route and is surrounded by busy hummingbird and tanager feeders, as well as fish ponds that shelter Blackish Rails. Some people, one or two of my family members included, hate Canada Geese with a passion that rivals their hatred for mosquitoes (if you’re from Maine, or New England at all, you know that hatred runs deep).
