Furthermore we have another very special stork-like bird, the regal Shoebill , previously known as the Whale-headed Stork but now placed in its own family. Ethiopia’s Rift Valley lakes such as Lake Ziway and Awassa are famous for the gangs of Marabous that hang around the fish markets and allow close approach in the hope of a smelly handout.

They really appeared to enjoy this, because as soon as they swam back to the rocks they would line up again to repeat the experience. Green-and-rufous Kingfisher is the only Cholorceryle species I haven’t seen, so observing one would complete a genus in this fascinating family. It seemed like a really fun way to spend the day!

I strongly suspect that the rate of attrition on this Loon family is inversely proportionate to the abundance of ducklings in the bay. Non-bird watchers without binoculars and experience are notoriously bad sources of information. That would of course require that fish lived in those lakes.) Ducks are easier prey for the Eagle.

Besides the urgent need to identify my dragonflies, I was interested in hands-on experience using these field guides. There are many more British species that resemble ours, but belong to different subfamilies or even families. High Brown Frit belongs to the Argynnis family and Variegated Frit is part of the Speyeria family.
