They both take responsibility protecting their young and remain in a family group for a period of time. It is not uncommon to experience this quite by accident due to the fact that the nests are so well camouflaged. They will do this to lead the intruder away from the nest area.

Pardalotes are actually their own family, and a family entirely endemic to Australia. Insofar as they relate to other bird families, they are perhaps closest to the thornbills, another family that is mostly Australian but reaches as far as Thailand and Fiji. A Spotted Pardalote ! What a treat!

That really is flooding rain and quite an experience. The family are inside the Poo Pond fence, so they are protected to a certain extent, but they are still their usual vocal selves. Reportedly, the Water Thick-knee sometimes locates its nest close to the nest of Nile crocodiles as this offers some protection. While hoopoes are in their own family, DNA studies suggest that the hoopoe diverged from hornbills, and the wood-hoopoes and scimitarbills from the hoopoe. They exercised this activity in part-time (96.5%).

This is a protected area that includes the Los Cusingos Bird refuge, where we were guided by Andres Chinchilla, a young man who as a child ran around the farm where his family worked, and was to become this incredible bird refuge. Danum Valley is a conservancy that protects a large area of lowland rainforest in Sabah in northeastern Borneo.
