Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of July 2021)

I found myself fully immersed in marine species while boating, fishing, and birding coastal Virginia with family this weekend. Out on the shore, though, a whole suite of species exists in the places we gravitate to anyway. The best of a bunch of birds I see all too rarely was, quite fittingly, Virginia Rail showing well in a saltmarsh.

Then we detoured into the center of Villahermosa, to see the Northern Potoo that spends each day in the garden of one of Rolando’s family members. Much more surprising, however, is that freshwater snails are also the preferred food for a local member of the hawk family. I wish I could have seen one fishing.

Unethical Photographers Bait Critically Endangered Eagles

Recently, a group of nature photographers were spotted using live fish to bait a family of Grey-headed Fish Eagles in Singapore, where the species is listed as Critically Endangered, with only about 12-18 breeding individuals left in the wild. A Grey-headed Fish Eagle photographed ethically.
