Whenever I walked from Foster to Fish Creek or Foster to Toora I encountered several family groups of Australian Magpies. There is a variation in the plumage of Australian Magpies across Australia and as such they looked different in Victoria.

In August, we took a family trip to beautiful San Diego, seeing SeaWorld , LegoLand , and the San Diego Zoo. On August 13, 2022, I woke up early, snuck out of the hotel room without waking the rest of the family, and was at Seaforth Landing on Mission Bay by 7:00 a.m. This was much larger.

Presbycusis is age-related hearing loss in humans, but I have also discovered that birds, fish and amphibians do not experience presbycusis due to the fact that they can regenerate their cochlear sensory cells. So, whilst we get older and start to struggle to hear the birds they can still hear us!

I would like a social pet that is fun to have ( have tried fishes but after 2 years we gave them away to a family that could take better care of them then we did) I would like an animal that isn’t afraid of people or stuff like that. Here in the Sea of Cortez, we have a fairly decent population of a family of a fish called Tetratdontidae , or more commonly known as Pufferfish. I only taxonomy from phylum to family, since i feel like there wouldnt be much reason to include genus, since a lot of genuses only have a couple of species and since you should be able to guess the animal by knowing the family and where it lives, size etc.

And my one lifer for the trip was a family of Rufous-naped Wrens that apparently live in the same garden. My schedule was not too full, so there was lots of free time to check out the local fauna.

I am reminded of the ducks’ perilous and arduous existence on each family outing to Heidelberg Zoo. He doesn’t go there for the ducks, but for the fish. The result is a description of the Velvet-fronted Nuthatch like this: “One of the few nuthatches to break the general neutral color scheme of the family, this stunner can be quite common …” This species is a cavity nester but unable to build its own cavities. Meanwhile, the fish guts around a fishermen’s landing zone caused the local Egrets and Night Herons to break out in dancing. At the end of October, my family flew to Florida for a multi-day road trip aimed at the beautiful springs. Water quality was good that day, and we could perfectly see the waving eelgrass, the freshwater fish species, the adorable turtles. Fish & Wildlife Service expects sea levels to rise due to global warming, swamping beaches on which Snowy Plovers currently nest, it is good news that the number of beaches proposed for protection as Snowy Plover nesting habitat has doubled. Two highlights of the walk back were a bright green Greater Green Leafbird and a Lesser Fish Eagle following the road above our heads. Fulvettas are also babblers, and the family, or families, are very well represented here – we also heard Short-tailed Babblers and Chestnut-backed Scimitar-babblers. Did I mention them?

These consist of Red-crowned Crane , Blakiston’s Fish-Owl , and Steller’s Sea-Eagle – all among the most massive and spectacular representatives of their families. Several more hours of driving on icy roads took us to Washi-no-yado, a traditional Japanese B&B near Rausu, the ‘place to be’ for Blakiston’s Fish-Owl.
