This is the home of the Rusty-naped Pitta , admittedly one of the less glamorous of the family, particularly the subspecies found in Yunnan, but still a nice sight and still a pitta. The scientific species name of the Rusty-naped Pitta oatesi honors Eugene William Oates (1845-1911), an English civil servant in India and naturalist.

Even in January, the place is hot, humid, smelly (with dead fish being the dominant flavor, though there are also subtle undertones of other rotting things as well as chemicals), cramped, muddy, and full of plastic trash. Anyway, it seems to work reasonably well for the two species I saw here.

Whenever I walked from Foster to Fish Creek or Foster to Toora I encountered several family groups of Australian Magpies. On warmer days I sometimes encountered Australian Magpies “sun-bathing” We have observed several bird species displaying this characteristic of spreading their wings out wide on hot days.

Recently, a group of nature photographers were spotted using live fish to bait a family of Grey-headed Fish Eagles in Singapore, where the species is listed as Critically Endangered, with only about 12-18 breeding individuals left in the wild. A Grey-headed Fish Eagle photographed ethically.

In August, we took a family trip to beautiful San Diego, seeing SeaWorld , LegoLand , and the San Diego Zoo. Additionally, there are still a few regularly-occurring Pacific pelagic species that I have never seen. My recollection of prior trips is that we used relatively small fishing boats and had 20-25 birders, plus the leaders.

Hey, in 1959 Walt Disney set up a studio on the island and filmed Swiss Family Robinson there! By late March, hordes of Laughing Gulls and multiple species of pelagic terns gather for their turn. Each day, the smaller seabirds leave their roost to fish in the rich waters offshore – under the watchful eyes of the frigatebirds.

Admittedly, early May is too late to find most duck species in Michoacán, even in a good year.) But I did find a wonderful surprise on that trip , a species to which I will return below. Here in the Sea of Cortez, we have a fairly decent population of a family of a fish called Tetratdontidae , or more commonly known as Pufferfish. This not only makes them much larger, but in nearly all of the species, allows the sharp barbs, that lay flat along the body, to now stick straight out. Talk about a great defense.

One of the sweetest subsections of the duck family has to be the sawbills, formally known as mergansers. Mergansers are a family of diving waterfowl in Merginae , the seaduck subfamily of Anatidae. As the national bird of Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, the African Fish Eagle is usually very busy whenever it stays in these countries, giving speeches, opening shopping centers, etc. The Latin species name vermiculatus (worm-like) refers to the markings on the upperparts.
