Considering the ten most recent additions before this March averaged six months apart getting six new species in eight months is mind-blowing. Way back in March we were in the midst of a global pandemic and Queens was the epicenter of the epicenter that was New York City. I just have to be at the right place at the right time.

This just might be a birding joke as old as the hills, but it’s one I hear without fail every year come Christmas Bird Count season in upstate New York. Now, Wood Ducks are somewhat uncommon in eastern New York in winter and after an inevitable few seconds of silence, some smirking wisecracker pipes up with “Do wooden duck counts?”

This time, the first to find it was Tom Burke, one of New York State’s top birders both in terms of skill and list-size. Not easy, right? When Lisa found that golden-plover on the sand bar we had all, collectively, gone through those birds probably five times. Is there a reason? Did it fly in unobserved?

On a recent family trip to Jones Beach, on New York’s Long Island, I had the opportunity to observe a small flock of gulls bathing, resting, and preening in some shallow brackish water that had collected behind the beach. Ugly, right? They can also, because of their odd appearance, be difficult to identify.

As of Friday, 11 May, Anthony had already seen 283 species in New York State, a blistering and likely record-setting pace ( Richard Fried is the current record-holder with 352 species seen in 2011 ).
