A bulge in a tree fork behind, likely a broken branch… no, it’s a Black Woodpecker. A strange duck, let’s see… an eclipse male Red-crested Pochard ! This was the last of the local ducks that I managed to find (it took me years of birding), and ever since I have seen it only once in every 2-3 years.

Adams, the refuge is one of the few breeding locations for Sandhill Cranes in Washington. The refuge now supports most of the nesting Sandhills in Washington, with around 25 breeding pairs. There are a few breeding pairs elsewhere in the state, including a rare pair at Ridgefield NWR this year. The Conboy Lake CCP is here.

Lesser Whistling Ducks are “not threatened by hunting as they are not considered good to eat” ( Wikipedia ). Lucky ducks. However, unfortunately, this seems to be mainly true for Laced Woodpecker (female) … … and Greater Flameback (female). “Odd, me?” But the joke simply does not work then).

According to their website , Lassen Volcanic National Park provides habitat for approximately 216 species of birds in which 96 have been known to actually breed in the park. We will hopefully see the rare Black-backed Woodpecker ( Picoides arcticus ) as well. Many of those species also nest in the park. and maybe hear it drum!

My Eastern Sibley served me well, replacing the Peterson’s with which I learned my ducks and waders. I was a little sad to see that the newer editions don’t have the second signature birds (Wood Duck for Eastern, Tufted Puffin for Western) and regional maps on the spine.

Red-rumped Woodpeckers are the least encountered of the three woodpecker species found on Tobago, and this was only the second time I was able to photograph them properly. The Red-rumped Woodpecker is a strange one: on Tobago it is a forest resident while on Trinidad you are far more likely to encounter it in mangrove habitat.
