Then, at 6 PM, as the sun disappeared completely over the horizon, the ducks on the pond started massing on the west end of the pond, with many small flocks from all over the pond flying in to the west end until it was basically covered with ducks. A pair of Muscovy Ducks lounged in a distant tree. Snail Kite Muscovy Duck White-tailed Goldenthroat This small group of Lineated Woodpeckers were deeply engaged in some form of discussion. A Hairy Woodpecker ? I soon added Common Mergansers , Hooded Mergansers , Mallards, Hairy and Downy and Pileated and Red-bellied Woodpeckers , both White and Red-breasted Nuthatches , and American Crows. I literally fist-pumped the air when I spotted Long-tailed Ducks and a Surf Scoter. A Red-breasted Nuthatch perhaps?

What I am getting at here is that I have seen lots and lots of Ruddy Ducks at Jamaica Bay but never one that looked like this particular individual. She was essentially cream-colored, much lighter than the typical female Ruddy Duck. Anyway, enjoy the images and keep an eye out for odd ducks! Go check it out! Get yours today!

The usual ducks were also present – Black-bellied Whistling Duck and White-cheeked Pintail. Both of these are dabbling ducks while the scaups are divers. Checking some of the other ponds revealed more ducks, namely a group of ten Blue-winged Teal and a staggering number of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks.

So does this Mexican Duck (NOT a Mallard sub-race, according to the 2020 AOS decision): Note the (lack of) depth of this water. But the Fulvous Whistling-Ducks were the ones that really won my hearts. Extra points to these Whistling-Ducks for finding water deep enough to swim in. Maybe they just like a little variety.

Lesser Whistling Ducks are “not threatened by hunting as they are not considered good to eat” ( Wikipedia ). Lucky ducks. However, unfortunately, this seems to be mainly true for Laced Woodpecker (female) … … and Greater Flameback (female). “Odd, me?” But the joke simply does not work then).

A bulge in a tree fork behind, likely a broken branch… no, it’s a Black Woodpecker. A strange duck, let’s see… an eclipse male Red-crested Pochard ! This was the last of the local ducks that I managed to find (it took me years of birding), and ever since I have seen it only once in every 2-3 years.

While driving along the Trekvaart canal I spotted hundreds of Tufted Duck with a nice sprinkling of Smew , Common Pochard and Common Goldeneye. There were also Tundra Bean Goose , a variety of ducks, a pair of Slavonian Grebe , Mute Swan and passerines like Eurasian Siskin , Fieldfare and European Goldfinch. So it was this day.

As the Red-Shouldered Hawk seen above screamed overhead, Acorn Woodpeckers not only treated themselves to the woodpecker feeder, they had to attack the sunflower feeders as well. As I walked out on my back porch on Friday morning, the first day of the count, it was a cool, clear day and the birds were very active at the feeders.

My pre-breakfast list was wildfowl dominated, the 10 species I saw ranging from Black-necked Swans to the endemic Falkland Islands Flightless Steamer Duck. The latter are great bruisers of ducks, built like a small battle ship. With bulk like that, it’s no wonder that they gave up flying long ago.

One small thing that made me happy this weekend was the return of Long-tailed Ducks to our lakeshore. Corey could have chosen his first Pine Siskins of the year in New York, a Red-headed Woodpecker , a late Osprey , or a Vesper Sparrow as his Best Bird of the Weekend this weekend.
