A Hairy Woodpecker ? I soon added Common Mergansers , Hooded Mergansers , Mallards, Hairy and Downy and Pileated and Red-bellied Woodpeckers , both White and Red-breasted Nuthatches , and American Crows. I literally fist-pumped the air when I spotted Long-tailed Ducks and a Surf Scoter. Can I add more Maine species this summer?

Starting the New Year by trying to see as many species as possible is something of a birding tradition. My diary notes that the New Year dawned grey and windy, but I rose early, walked six miles before breakfast and noted a modest 26 species of birds. The latter are great bruisers of ducks, built like a small battle ship.

Photo Una.World/rs The next patch to visit was the Reva Pond, farther down the Danube, to find the Black Woodpecker , 3 WT Eagles and a Eurasian Otter walking on ice, from one hole to another, diving for a short while and continuing farther. And at the beginning of February, my list is still ridiculously low at 55 species.

Then, at 6 PM, as the sun disappeared completely over the horizon, the ducks on the pond started massing on the west end of the pond, with many small flocks from all over the pond flying in to the west end until it was basically covered with ducks. For once, eBird gives a good description of the Asian Glossy Starling, calling it a “Fierce-looking, large songbird” As are humans, this species is fairly urbanized – it “sometimes enters urban areas to roost, e.g. in Singapore” (HBW). Lucky ducks. “Odd, me?”

The usual ducks were also present – Black-bellied Whistling Duck and White-cheeked Pintail. Both of these are dabbling ducks while the scaups are divers. Checking some of the other ponds revealed more ducks, namely a group of ten Blue-winged Teal and a staggering number of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks.

and Canadian birders: Brown Creeper , White-breasted Nuthatch , Hairy Woodpecker , and Sharp-shinned Hawk. I had only tried to bird it once before, a year earlier, and was left thoroughly underwhelmed: no water-loving birds but a couple of Snowy Egrets and three domestic ducks swimming free.

What I am getting at here is that I have seen lots and lots of Ruddy Ducks at Jamaica Bay but never one that looked like this particular individual. She was essentially cream-colored, much lighter than the typical female Ruddy Duck. Anyway, enjoy the images and keep an eye out for odd ducks! Go check it out! Get yours today!

A bulge in a tree fork behind, likely a broken branch… no, it’s a Black Woodpecker. A strange duck, let’s see… an eclipse male Red-crested Pochard ! This was the last of the local ducks that I managed to find (it took me years of birding), and ever since I have seen it only once in every 2-3 years.

So does this Mexican Duck (NOT a Mallard sub-race, according to the 2020 AOS decision): Note the (lack of) depth of this water. It was also great to finally travel overseas again, meet a lot of people I did not know (and some I did), to be in a new country… and not just the new country, but its best birding area, where almost all local hotspots are yellow (150+ species) and several are ochre (200+ sp.), impressive for Central Europe.

Certainly what I would consider to be an under birded area, eBird.com lists 232 species on 397 total check lists. On my last couple of visits, California Gulls, Ring-billed Gulls, Ruddy Ducks, Common Gallinule, Western Grebe, Eared Grebe and Pied-billed Grebes were on the water. Here is one of our local Ladder-backed Woodpeckers.

How many species have I observed this year? Arctic Loon), Lesser Black-backed Gull , Middle Spotted Woodpecker and Goldcrest should easily make 190, although the pecker is a bit uncertain. And immediately, I hear a woodpecker looking for food. The largest of European peckers – the uncommon Black Woodpecker !

As the Red-Shouldered Hawk seen above screamed overhead, Acorn Woodpeckers not only treated themselves to the woodpecker feeder, they had to attack the sunflower feeders as well. All in all, I tallied 44 species. Fun birding!
