The ABA currently lumps the Mangrove Warbler and Golden Warbler with the Yellow Warbler (the IOC lumps Mangrove and Golden Warbler together but splits them from the Yellow Warbler that breeds in North America.) My Eastern Sibley served me well, replacing the Peterson’s with which I learned my ducks and waders. I was a little sad to see that the newer editions don’t have the second signature birds (Wood Duck for Eastern, Tufted Puffin for Western) and regional maps on the spine. This means that loons are no longer first!

The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. Like most maps, colors are used to indicate seasonal status (breeding resident, Austral migrant/visitor, Boreal migrant, etc.). Tintaya’s woodpeckers also nicely feature tree (and cactus!)

Felonious Jive really likes a ravishing returning rarity – a Falcated Duck. Falcated Duck by Felonious Jive Duncan Wright had some pretty good birds to choose from for his Best Bird of the Year. I chose the Black-backed Woodpecker as my Best Bird of the Year for a couple of reasons. Sound good?

Of the Central Flyway states, Nebraska alone holds out in protecting the cranes, having proven by its longstanding Festival of the Cranes in Kearney that a crane is worth infinitely more alive and purring in the sky with its family than thudding, broken and bleeding, into a cornfield. Plus, I mean, it’s a giant chicken-looking thing that’s actually related to ducks… with that kind of identity crisis going on, what’s not to love? Not to mention, its brilliantly bulbous crimson throat, bloated during breeding season must be a sight! The Magnificent Frigatebird is the bird I would want to see.

Another 170 are in captivity, many of them breeding stock for reintroduction efforts. Most of the deer and duck hunters I know lament the loss of an old growth forest or flood-plain swamp as much as I do.
