I was just thinking that tailorbird might be a good brand name for a cheap line of men’s clothing. Lesser Whistling Ducks are “not threatened by hunting as they are not considered good to eat” ( Wikipedia ). Lucky ducks. Seeing a Rufous Woodpecker for the first time, I thought it looked kind of weird.

Extinct birds, such as Ivory-billed Woodpecker, are included. When you review the system, it makes perfect sense: falcons are placed with hawks, nightjars are next to owls, and grebes are close to ducks, rather than separated from them by quail and grouse. It also makes me, personally, approach the guide with some skepticism.

Interestingly, Chestnut-collared Longspur does appear under its brand-new official name, Thick-billed Longspur, though the description underneath uses the old name. It was actually a very easy count since each species account is one page long except for Red-tailed Hawk and Dark-eyed Junco, which get two pages each.

Brown Pelicans , and the northernmost Brown Booby breeding colony on this side of the Pacific. Other birds with webbed feet, including ducks and geese, have only three webbed toes; the hallux (which in birds is usually the “hind toe&# and in humans, the “big toe&# ) is free. Make up your mind, Ringer!

When you spot a brand new bird identification guide, especially for your home region – in this case, Europe – reaching for it comes naturally. And a highly recommendable book it is, there is no doubt about it. The important characters successfully stand out in bold letters. Regarding maps, they tend to be on a smallish side.

Shallows provide an ideal spawning ground for almost 50 fish species and submerged islands breeding ground for more than 100 bird species. Beside several well-showing Red-backed Shrikes , the highlight was one uncommon Lesser Grey Shrike (highly localized ** , with only 700 to 1000 breeding pairs in Serbia). I like driving.
