Tawny Frogmouths breeding again

10,000 Birds

I didn’t hang around, but took a few photos to capture the Tawny Frogmouth family that has once again bred close to home. We first noticed the odd eye in April this year, but it does not appear to bother it and it can still feed and obviously breed too. Tawny Frogmouth family. Tawny Frogmouth with an odd right eye.

Birding around Chaka, Qinghai, China

10,000 Birds

The Ala Shan Redstart (which I will not call Przevalski’s Redstart, see my juvenile rants about the evil Mr Przevalski in earlier editions of this blog) is a very attractive bird and – as many attractive birds – listed as Near Threatened. Finally, always good to end a blog post with a vulture as a gentle memento mori.

If you wonder how such a self-referential and obscure joke survived the editing process for this blog post, the explanation is simple: There is no editing process). The popstars are back: Paradise Flycatchers in Shanghai

10,000 Birds

Such an embarrassingly populist title of a blog post should obviously be followed by some dry facts. Here goes: Paradise Flycatchers are a genus in the broader (and rather large) family of Monarchidae. There are 17 different species of them, a few of them endangered, particularly some island endemics.
