While entering our double kayak I asked Andrew Hester, a local bird expert, if bilharzia is present in the shallows of the Ngotwane Dam, further down the river. An ultimate freshwater predator that for 100 million years felt no need to evolve any further, the Nile crocodile is the largest African reptile by far. Grey Heron 4.

Continuing the celebration of commonplace birds we now hail the ubiquitous Great Blue Heron. This one was so good it caught two fish at a time (just once though). They do like to supplement their diet with small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects. Their beautiful blue-gray can really pop in the right light.

One of the joys of being able to sit quietly for a few moments is the opportunity to enjoy birds going about their normal business. Without the neck mechanisms that allow herons to strike at the fish, it had to rush forward to grab the mudskipper. They locate their prey by sight. That wasn’t working well.

The dam provided me with several new birds, including Green Pygmy-geese, Bar-breasted Honeyeaters, Wandering Whistling Ducks, Intermediate Herons, Pied Herons, Comb-crested Jacanas, Forest Kingfishers, Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike , and the afore mentioned Rufus-banded Honeyeater. Look at the legs on that bird ! The Northern Fantail.

These mangroves function as a sanctuary for fish and other animals that then make their way as adults across the channel to the coral reefs that surround the island. The boat-trip over to the island is far from uneventful and the pelagic birding is very rewarding. Red-billed Tropicbirds nest on these craggy cliffs.

African Spoonbills seem unfazed by large reptiles. While some bustards are the largest bird species capable of flight, the Black-bellied Bustard is only mid-sized. Years ago, I became a wildlife volunteer and advocate because of a cat who caught a bird. Back then, I didn’t know enough about birds, but I knew a lot about cats. I surprised her and she dropped the bird before vaporizing again. They simply helped me with my bird. That was my first trip to California Wildlife Center.
