The dam provided me with several new birds, including Green Pygmy-geese, Bar-breasted Honeyeaters, Wandering Whistling Ducks, Intermediate Herons, Pied Herons, Comb-crested Jacanas, Forest Kingfishers, Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike , and the afore mentioned Rufus-banded Honeyeater. Some birds, reptiles, and sharks have nictitating membranes as well as a few mammals. The membrane provides protection, but it also allows the eye to be moisturized without the bird loosing sight. This is extremely helpful for birds of prey flying at high speed, as it prevents their eyes from drying out.

The reptile care is horrible with the humidity levels being too low and they house chameleons together. The ginuea pig cages are small with very little toys same with the rat cages. They also sometimes house rats and Guinea pigs alone wich will cause depression. Hamsters also need to be housed alone and need around 3ft of space. Each other.

Our group saw over 400 birds on our 15-day tour of the Pantanal, Cerrado and the Amazon (Cristalino Lodge). When we have camped at Ellendale Dam in the past we have invariable been woken by Blue-winged Kookaburras and they are often the last bird to call out as the sun drops below the horizon. Blue-winged Kookaburras eat insects, reptiles and frogs and this bird would often collect quite a large mass of wet and muddy leaves with its food.
