Hongbenghe is a very small village in Yunnan, right next to the border with Myanmar. The main attraction for birders here are the hornbills – I have written about them before , so this post will be more on the other birds I saw there in 2017. One road simply ends here, giving the place a real end-of-the-world feeling.

Our resident shorebirds have started to breed in the last few weeks and there are numerous Pied Oystercatcher nests along our shores right now. We knew that she may well not be right at the nest when we initially noticed her movement and moved slowly forward making sure that we found her footprints and therefore the nest.

We moved back and sat on the sand and watched the Pied Oystercatcher family. As we sat observing the Pied Oystercatcher family the adult with the chicks moved down onto the sand below us and the other one stood guard. Pied Oystercatcher family. The NRA has tried to portray this movement as “taking away hunters’ rights,” which does nothing but insult the hunters already on board. The Center for Biological Diversity wants to stop the NRA’s lead-poisoning legislation.

The eggs usually hatch out quite close together and then the family can all move away from the nest site. They are a large chunky bird with substantial legs when they hatch out. There are dangers around the nest site and the sooner they could move the family away from the exposed nest site the better.

And then, two canids appeared in my scope field of view… My plan was that the downpour should finally be over in the morning, so I could go birding. Ka’ena Point is also a breeding ground for the Federally protected Laysan albatross, where 45 nests were being carefully monitored by the non-profit Pacific Rim Conservation. The young men had severed the birds’ legs in order to remove the tags. They were simply sent to Family Court. Gutierrez was 18. He didn’t do it.

Over the past few months there have been a lot of birds breeding around Broome with the excellent rain events that we have been having and the vegetation is at long last revived. Only, once I got there, I discovered that the coffee, while good, can’t compare to the birds. Our group saw over 400 birds on our 15-day tour of the Pantanal, Cerrado and the Amazon (Cristalino Lodge).
