Last year, in November, I notched up a dozen species of butterflies, an impressive total anywhere in Europe so late in the year. Wintering Wallcreepers are always a possibility, too, generally in quarries where Eagle Owls are resident. One year we found an impressively big calidus Peregrine, feeding on a Wigeon that it had killed.

In the grand scheme of things, this is just a small town and only one person was killed due to injuries suffered. Kelly Preheim was talking about the large numbers of Snowy Owls on the nearby National Wildlife Refuge. There were 23 cows killed; some had to be shot up in trees where they were stuck. That blew my mind.

Betty’s Bay was also a great place to see all of South Africa’s cormorant species, including the endangered Bank Cormorant. We observed far fewer Lesser Flamingos, a near-threatened species. We did get introduced to Geiner Huertas Reyes, who took us for a walk along part of the river and into a public park, where we put together a nice list of 61 species. Another species in the long name category, would be this Common Chlorospingus. After bashing it on a branch to kill it, it did finally get it swallowed.
