The woman was friends with the chimp’s “owner , and was called to help coax him back indoors after he escaped using a key to unlock the front door. Sandra Herold, the woman who kept Travis, seemed surprised by this attack on her friend because “ He could eat at the table, drink wine from a stemmed glass, use the toilet, and dress and bathe himself. During the attack, Herold called police, and pleaded with them to help her friend.

Owen County Friends of Animals (KY) is a non-profit organization that fosters and seeks adoptions for the dogs picked up by their local dog warden. Doesn't he look like my boy Charles ? Dogs they can not place in foster care or find adoptive homes for are euthanized after 14 days by county ordinance. Their shelter is full. Flex is a handsome, neutered male, red fawn greyhound (currently under 60 pounds). He came to OCFA totally flea infested and with a few open wounds.

I've always thought of horse-drawn carriages the way I think about greyhound racing or fur: Most people are against them, so why are they still around? It's dying because of low attendance at a venue that's relatively expensive to maintain. The Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages calls itself "an animal rights-protection-abolitionist organization," which I find interesting. Regardless, they are joining Friends of Animals and Hearts for Animals on Saturday December 5.

Although most of the threats to the Spotted Owl relate to its dwindling old growth forest habitat, it also faces potential threats from another bird. The most recent plan for the Spotted Owl called for experimental “removal” of Barred Owls from Spotted Owl habitat.

To the Editor: Re “ Mustangs Stir a Debate on Thinning the Herd ” (front page, July 20): The Bureau of Land Management is charged with protecting wild horses and burros on the Western rangelands. Faced with budgetary constraints, however, it might put to death some of the 30,000 horses it is holding—a herd as big as the community of free horses still roaming the West. Animals in nature don’t need to be controlled by a species that has such difficulty in controlling itself.
