Crows, Contest Killing, and Communication

10,000 Birds

After scrolling through piles of furious emails regarding a recent blog about Rip Van Winkle’s Crow Killing Contest , it seemed to me that all of us needed Dr. Phil. The subject was not hunting; it was contest killing. Contest killing – where individuals or teams gun down as many of a single species as they can within a specific time period, with prizes going to the winner(s) – is legal all over the country. What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate.

Rip Van Winkle’s Crow Killing Contest

Some people think it’s just plain fun to kill enormous numbers of animals and pile up their bodies, and when there’s no “bag limit” it’s legal to do so. A hero of the Rip Van Winkle Rod & Gun Club is – no doubt – Bob Aronsohn, who lives in Kansas and in December 2013 celebrated killing his 150,000th crow. One hopes this is the direction in which all killing contests are headed. I am not anti-hunting.

Africa’s endangered species

10,000 Birds

More than 150 bird species are known to have become extinct over the past 500 years, and many more are estimated to have been driven to extinction before they became known to science. The bulk of the recent bird extinctions has been on islands, where species are more susceptible to extermination due to smaller ranges, lower population sizes and a lack of adaptation for coping with introduced predators.

We Should Kill More Lions

10,000 Birds

There are times when acting in the conservation interest of a species or ecosystem means that the welfare of specific animals is compromised, which is a fancy way of saying that conservationists sometimes have to kill animals for the greater good. If you don’t accept that we sometimes have to do harm to individuals to do good for the species, well, nothing I’m going to say is going to convince you. You protect an entire ecosystem that holds 350 bird species.

A New Way Global Warming Kills Birds

10,000 Birds

Birds are famous for manipulating brood size (in some species) in response to likely availability of food, and this ability has been at the center of major debates in biology over the level at which natural selection works. These results show that daily temperature variability can substantially impact the population viability of endothermic species.

Feral Cats Are An Invasive Species in North America (and elsewhere)

This is approximated by the size of the animal, but really, this has to be adjusted for depending on modality of killing. The number of birds, and other animals, killed by feral Cats is probably large , but it either varies a great deal from place to place, or the estimates are so inaccurate that they, the estimates themselves, vary a great deal from place to place. Also, feral Cats on islands seem to be a serious problem, causing the extirpation of some indigenous species.
