Bird Litigation: Spotted Owl v. Barred Owl

10,000 Birds

The Northern Spotted Owl is a “ threatened ” species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act and it was famously the subject of extensive and protracted litigation in the late 1980s and early 1990s, mostly relating to forestry management plans in the Pacific Northwest. Although most of the threats to the Spotted Owl relate to its dwindling old growth forest habitat, it also faces potential threats from another bird.

Season of the Owl

10,000 Birds

October is a good month to see owls in Shanghai, where these birds are rare in most other months. Two species can be seen quite regularly – Northern Boobook and Oriental Scops Owl. In contrast, Oriental Scops Owls seem to often migrate in slightly larger groups of maybe 10 or so. For Oriental Scops Owl, at least two color morphs exist, a grey-brown one and a scarcer rufous one. We are lucky enough here in Broome to have a pair of Barking Owls that have chosen to roost in town. Over the years there have been Barking Owls observed in the Town Beach area and the Courthouse gardens and we have heard them “barking” at home as well. Invasive Species Week Wrap-Up

10,000 Birds

One wonders how innocent the Spotted Owl finds the rampant range expansion of the Barred Owl. Perhaps our outrage at invasive species can be a bit hypocritical at times. Listers are quick to put aside their condemnation of invasive species once they attain that coveted status of exotic: not native, not fully naturalized, but established well enough to be countable by the prevailing authority. Nonetheless, this week will be chock full of invasive species.
