In fact, crests occur in at least 20 of the 30 orders of extant birds, and in all major groups of passerines. Quite a few bird species have crests. Crests are made of feathers. Their main use is to display – either to communicate with other members of the species or to scare other species, as a raised crest makes the bird appear larger.

Binocular snobbery

In the late 80s I was invited by Zeiss to go to Wetzlar in Germany to see the company’s binoculars being manufactured, an invitation that was too good to refuse. I was one of a small group of journalists, each of whom was presented with the latest Dialyt 10×40 inscribed with our initials.

Birding Yibin, Sichuan

Yibin is a typical smallish Chinese city (which in China means slightly above 850,000 people in the metro area, which would make it the fifth-biggest city in Germany but does not get it into the top 100 in China). In one group, they added a blue egg to their nests. In the other, they added both such an egg and a peanut half-shell.

More Winter Birding in Bonn

Most notably, a group of five Greater Scaups was present in one of the large ponds in the Rheinaue urban park, where they were present for a while. They were scattered among large numbers of Tufted Ducks and particularly Common Pochard , creating a active group of diving ducks that was fun to watch.

They’ve Got Personality

Extra points to these American Avocets for adopting a different pose for each numbered group. Still, this Carrion Crow in Munich, Germany, had that Blackbird beat: It came so close to me that it did not fit in the camera’s frame. Come to think of it, lots of birds show lots of personality.
