Although the bird was found a while ago, it had still been seen the day before I went to check out the site with my mother (not a birder but interested in birds), who, in an unlikely coincidence, came across this species a few days earlier when looking through my bird guide and decided that she would really want to see this species.

The listing was easy too since the world total of accepted species stood at a little over 8,000, meaning you could become a world birder by just putting up a backyard feeder.

The group comprised of two colourful and one drab bird, presumably two males and a female, and the males were easily identified as Garganeys , the coolest dabblers of the planet. You see, there is one other species of dabbling duck in Europe that’s about the size of a Garganey and that shows a very pale head: the Marbled Teal.

During the early 1990s, rumours surrounding the occurrence of a few Egyptian Geese in far north-western Germany emerged, the result of an increasing and spreading Dutch feral population. Bad developments indeed, particularly as the White-backed Vulture was found to be a good avian biomonitor species – if it does badly, most likely the environment as a whole will do badly, too. I could immediately tell them it was an Egyptian Goose – an invasive species in Germany but not at Kruger.

I recently saw and photographed what appears to be a Baikal Wagtail ( Motacilla alba-or-not baicalensis ) in Germany. The second group has two odd forms with a limited distribution, namely yarrellii of the British isles and sub-personata from Morocco. So it may turn out to be a bit of a big deal. Why is that so?
