So it was with my family’s trip to Borneo, where, for the end our trip, we had a choice of the Semporna Archipelago, home of the world famous dive site of Sipadan, or Mantanani, a small island off Borneo’s north coast which also had beaches and diving. Its mostly found on the ground in thickets or the edges of dense vegetation and usually in small family parties. Another not very pink species is the Pink-footed Puffback.

At the end of October, my family flew to Florida for a multi-day road trip aimed at the beautiful springs. On one occasion we saw a pair of Red Turtle Doves beside the fishing lake. There is a massive nest at the top of a tower beside the Sports Centre and a family of Monk Parakeets have taken up residence. We encountered several bird species there including a Yellow-rumped Flycatcher and a nesting Red-breasted Parakeet.

I also got my first ever confirmed Loggerhead Turtle too (and finally learned to tell them from Green Turtles , which are also there). This Green Turtle was at the feeding, under the dock!

In the time we spent on Culebra I saw 49 species of birds, not bad for an island outside of the wintering grounds for most neotropical migrants and only measuring eleven miles square. Sea turtles can be seen from the beach or while snorkling at Tamarindo Beach, especially if you go early in the morning.

Groups of Cape Turtle Doves feeding on the grass were occasionally joined by a nervous and much larger Rameron Pigeon, and Southern Grey-headed Sparrows and a single Bokmakierie hoped around as well. Mousebirds are a uniquely African family and they really brought it home to me that I was back in Africa after a decade.

In the parking area I immediately encountered a pair of Australian Brush-turkeys as well as a new species for me, a Grey-headed Robin. This huge member of the Australian robin family is really tame in this carpark, making it probably the easiest place n the world to see the species (other than the Tableland it is only found in New Guinea).
