Turtles of Brigantine

10,000 Birds

Finally, the turtle species that I saw more than any other, the one that is in the “Turtle Crossing&# picture above, the Northern Diamondback Terrapin Malaclemys terrapin terrapin. As I may have mentioned before , I have been spending an occasional hour or so doing the auto loop at the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, better known as Brigantine. One of the amazing aspects of Brigantine in late spring is the sheer volume of turtles one can encounter.

A River Runs Through It

European Pond Terrapins resting on a floating log. Rainy Sunday morning, the type of weather that will keep most people in bed, but those who know the secret would have the entire river for themselves. Calm surface of the Danube in front of our canoe reflected willows and tussocks of bright-yellow Flag Iris. Black-crowned Night Herons were foraging from roots protruding from the banks. From a dry tree above the river branch came the deep and throaty call of a pair of Common Ravens.

On the opposite bank, European pond terrapins are basking in the sun and, behind them, a herd of horses is grazing, preventing the scrub from taking over the grasslands. In a warm Catalonian March (I was about to say Spanish, but among quite a few flags, I haven’t seen a single Spanish one), Barcelona was filled with sunlight and full of Rose-ringed and Monk Parakeets , two charming but alien and invasive species.

Now nearing 50 and duly lost in a mid-life crisis, Dragan Simic took to birding rather late – only half a lifetime ago, after successfully testing his inadequate skills in other life threatening activities, such as rock climbing and vertical caving.

24 Hours in Bangkok; Bang Pra

One interesting experience here was finding a baby terrapin on the road and picking it up to move it only for peter to call out a Common Iora , one of my two lifer families of the day. Well, I made it to the UK and am now enjoying the cold and dark in what should be my winter. No matter, the warm fire and comforts of home are nice, as is the winter birding here. On the way I managed to sneak in a manic day of birding in and around the capital of Thailand, Bangkok.
