It would be a shame not to include the Russet-crowned Motmot , from a family known as racketbirds because of the shape of their two specialized central tail feathers. They can be found wherever mistletoe berries are present, since these are their main food source. In Paso Ancho, I have never seen this species away from the river.

The view from Sayer Road used to be very open and offered little protection many years ago and we contributed to the planting of small native trees in 1998 when we lived in Palmerston. There were good numbers of Green Pygmy-geese, Comb-crested Jacana, Great and Intermediate Egrets, Magpie Geese and a family of Black-necked Storks.

Eventually, I found the lone whooping crane present at the refuge by its call. In the only state in the Central Flyway that protects cranes from hunting. I have always supported our wildlife management organizations for the hard work they do and for their dedication to wildlife protection. I knew I’d never heard that before.

Royal National Park is one of the jewels of Sydney, a massive park that protects a huge swathe of coastal bush (bush in the Australian sense meaning anything from rainforest to coastal scrub) to the south of the city. Another bird that was present in several forest areas that we visited was the Forest Kingfisher with its distinct spots on its wings when in flight. We saw several of the kingfisher family whilst on our trip, including Azure Kingfisher, Red-backed Kingfisher and Sacred Kingfisher. Pair of Tawny Frogmouth.
