Greater and Lesser Yellow-headed Vultures are so similar that for a long time were thought to be the same species. The fact that one, the Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture, acted so differently and favored a different habitat alerted ornithologists to look closer and determine that indeed they were two separate species.

Experience shows that bird parents do feed babies in makeshift nests reattached to tree branches, bushes, gutters, and even tree cavity sections duct taped to another tree. Betty’s Bay was also a great place to see all of South Africa’s cormorant species, including the endangered Bank Cormorant. We observed far fewer Lesser Flamingos, a near-threatened species. There are at least three species of wildflowers clinging to this cliff by the way. I stayed a little longer, then went and got Travis (who had stayed at the truck playing) so he could experience this close encounter. We have seen Peregrine Falcons fly through circling flocks of shorebirds and Brown Goshawks attempt a kill, but generally they are able to escape by their constant circling.
