I saw two Pitta species at Hongbenghe, both among the slightly less glamourous among the pitta family: The Blue-naped Pitta … … and the closely related Rusty-naped Pitta. It seems that this is another species for which the standard phrase of scientists anywhere, “more research needed”, applies.

Apparently, no one has ever made it very clear to the Wren that it is but 10 cm in length, Europe’s smallest species after the two Kinglets, at 9 cm each. Maybe, just maybe, this bad morning before the first cup of coffe feeling is an aura that surrounds the Wren from the moment it peeks out of its egg shell.

Either that, or I see them in spring with hordes of other shorebirds feeding on the eggs of Horseshoe Crabs. Ruddy Turnstone is a Species of Least Concern according to BirdLife International. The two dozen species are, nearly to an individual, long bodied and bicolored. Unlike most of its cogeners, Venezuelan Troupial does not build one of those hanging bag nests so well known by the other Icterus species, it’s a nest parasite. Just lazy ones.

Here they are a common breeding bird, one of our two species that migrate from here to Europe and then south. I had hoped to have some Semipalmated Plover chick photos for comparison but as of last night they seem to be still at the egg stage. Why does this Common Ringed Plover have eight legs? With some serious legs.

Here in the British Isles we are lucky enough to have some of the largest and most important seabird colonies in Europe. They don’t nest until they are at least four or five years old, when they finally acquire full adult plumage, with the female laying just a single egg that takes 44 days to hatch. That was a wild cat, a wild Wildcat, the cat that lives in the wild because that is where it is from and where it belongs, at the southern end of its pan-African range that extended at one time well into Europe and Asia. As a result, I had 15 species in the first hour. Laight has recorded some 100 species here, including Slavonian (Horned) Grebe and Red-rumped Swallow (the first is a rare migrant/wintering species only, while the second one is an uncommon breeder). Other herons, egrets, gulls and terns are a surprise at this time of the year.

The most common species we see are the Stoke’s Sea Snake Astrotia stokesii , Dubois’ Sea Snake Aipysurus duboisii and the Olive Sea Snake Aipysurus laevis. She has lived in the Middle East and the United States and traveled extensively in Europe. These do lay eggs on land and are (reasonably) mobile once they hit the beach.

It’s a unique bird, even its scientific name is wonderful, so it’s not surprising that Gerard Gorman, Woodpecker Expert Supreme, has written a book all about the species. I was surprised to learn that there are two Wryneck species in the Jynx genus: Eurasian Wryneck, Jynx torquilla, and Red-throated Wryneck, Jynx ruficollis.

I don’t know how many Gray Partridges there are in America, but here in Britain (and Europe, too) we wouldn’t mind if some were sent back to their home countries, as this delightful little game bird has declined catastrophically throughout much of its range during the last 50 years.
