Gulls of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East: An Identification Guide

In field guides I’ve seen many beautiful gull paintings, where I couldn’t help asking myself: however alluring they may be, is the JIZZ just right? On the other hand, I do not feel confident in my knowledge of gulls to give a definite answer. From my experience, the gulling season is definitively winter. Or slightly off?

Horrible Hybrids

Looks like a scaup of some sort, but it’s not quite right My bird certainly had the peaked crown characteristic of a Lesser Scaup; the feathers on its head looked black at a distance, while closer inspection revealed a purple sheen. Lesser Scaup has only a slight black tip to the beak, while this bird had a clear black band.

Animal Person , someone who is clearly smarter than me, has a great analysis about the recent "Pepper" series in Slate about animal research. At least he didn't try to make me feel happy or warm and fuzzy about animal research. By the end of my time as researcher, I was performing behavioral experiments on humans.

“Caged” Egrets and Little Black Cormorants

We then go along Research Station Road, Stock Route Road and complete the circuit back into town along Weaber Plains Road. Right beside the road and the irrigation channel were a mixed flock of Cattle Egret , Intermediate Egrets and Little Black Cormorants all “caged” in.

It’s impossible to think of him being bothered by the wet, cold ground when there’s some count to be made definite after years of thinking about it, some esoteric puzzle to be finally solved. Like he does, say, for the Canyon wren. To humans, birdsong is akin to Joycean language, isn’t it? It’s a good life!

“Keep your taxonomy out of my field guide” – revisited

In the book from 1993 they are at the beginning of the songbirds, in 2009 three quarters towards the end, in 2014 almost on the last pages and in the most recent 2016 guide they are right in the middle. Look, I am definitely not part of the reason scientists were forced to march the streets recently.
