Whiskered Terns will breed in this area if the conditions are right. The bird-life has definitely benefitted by the recent outbreak of locusts. Looks like a scaup of some sort, but it’s not quite right My bird certainly had the peaked crown characteristic of a Lesser Scaup; the feathers on its head looked black at a distance, while closer inspection revealed a purple sheen. Lesser Scaup has only a slight black tip to the beak, while this bird had a clear black band.

One distant Violetear was positioned just right for us to see its full irridescent colors, although a small branch between us kept my camera from focusing exactly. Las Mesas is not my best hummingbird spot, but it’s definitely in my top 3. Another Violetear stayed faithful to his post, even while we walked beneath him.

If a large, powerful bird of prey capable of terrorizing a Wild Turkey comes to mind, that may be a fair definition of a hawk-eagle. We were in the right places at the right times, this is how two birders from Ohio and myself saw this majestic trio of birds. Basically, a hawk-eagle is kind of like a huge Accipiter with a crest.

The Radjah Shelduck family last week were swimming in the irrigation channel right against the road and so we could pull over and admire them. This would have to be one of the few families of Radjah Shelducks we have ever observed and definitely the smallest ducklings. There had only been one solitary Radjah Shelduck on that occasion.

It is definitely a nest with a view! On the warmer days the Pied Oystercatchers will leave the nest to go to the sea and they appear to dampen their feathers to maintain the right temperature for the eggs. This is the same nest site that they have used for many years.

In other words, they were definitely lifers. That’s 100% Barn Owl butt, right there. Still, the very next day I discovered that my long-awaited Sedge Wrens were not, in fact, Sedge Wrens. Unless you asked eBird, with which the best I could do was to list them as Sedge Wren (Grass Wren).

Right beside the road and the irrigation channel were a mixed flock of Cattle Egret , Intermediate Egrets and Little Black Cormorants all “caged” in. These Egrets and Little Black Cormorants are definitely using this structure to their advantage. Another significant flock of birds were to be found “caged” in!

In the case of these hawks, they definitely are not showing irruptive behavior, as I have seen them multiple times each year, often in the same place. (I And, gee, I do hope I am right. Two hawks took advantage of a very stiff wind to hover just overhead. And here they are, including a rare view of the upperparts of one hawk.

Knowing most American and Canadian tourists come to Mexico for the beaches, I would definitely recommend Puerto Vallarta as a birdy option. Luckily, she had no broken bones, but she did have a large open wound on her right wing. Unfortunately, in the meantime she broke the first six flight feathers on that right wing.
