Similar to 2020, more than 32,000 people participated, 78,000 checklists were submitted, and more than 7,200 bird species were identified. In Costa Rica, despite there seeming to be less enthusiasm than previous GBDs, enough local and visiting birders dedicated most of the day to binocular use to give us a fantastic total of 731 species !

It is a fascinating world of swampy forests of willow and poplar, inhabited by Black Storks , White-tailed Eagles , Eastern Olivaceous and Icterine Warblers (above), among more than 200 other species. I find the information helpful and insightful, as it can shed light on why some species were or were not seen on that trip. A good example is once when I was visiting Wyoming, I found a checklist from a few years earlier that had 750 Horned Larks, 100 Lapland Longspurs, and a Golden Eagle at a nondescript place called “Beef Unit.”

In early August this year, I saw 77 species here (69 on the lake, plus 8 more in the surrounding areas) but barely more than a thousand individuals. There was a Short-toed Eagle ahead, taking flight to be replaced by another ST Eagle. Spring (migrants and breeding species) and winter (wintering waterbirds). Best seasons.

I submitted five checklists from four different locations yielding 44 species. As an adult Bald Eagle and a first of the season flock of Tree Swallows flew overhead, several birds were cleaning up underneath the feeders. All in all, I tallied 44 species. We’re passing the Dasada village where shop owners and artisans are opening their doors, collecting rubbish in the street and burning it, while standing around those small fires and warming themselves up. Many are familiar with dissecting owl pellets, but several birds will caste a pellet including hawks, eagles, gulls, herons and heck, I once witnessed a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher hack up a small one. For example, since eagles and hawks tend to rip their prey apart and have stronger digestive acids, their pellets look like wads of fur.

A few of this species were at El Tapir the other day and we were very pleased to watch them zip around the Porterweed bushes. To top off the list of unusual species, we also saw two species rarely seen outside of cloud forest; Coppery-headed Emerald , and Magenta-throated Woodstar. or even Hudsonian Godwit.

Storks are typically viewed as wetland species and whilst some storks are restricted to aquatic habitats, others are not. You will either have to leave it at the airport and collect it later (using up precious time), or carry it with you in hot, humid conditions. The birding is not exceptional, but you can easily see some of Singapore’s and South-east Asia’s more common species and it does throw up the occasional jewel. Spotted Wood-owl.
