Cooper’s Hawk Eating a Road-Killed Canada Goose

On the same day that I journeyed out to eastern Long Island to enjoy birding Shinnecock Inlet in the fog I also explored the fields of Riverhead, where large flocks of geese congregate and where a Yellow-headed Blackbird had been reported recently amid a large flock of icterids at a Buffalo farm.

Weird Geese

It returned last year with a small flock of Canada Geese and then again this year with a much bigger flock, nearing 150, that contained more oddities. But then compare the size of it against the Canada Geese. It is far bigger than a Canada Goose whilst it should be noticeably smaller (even a Greater should be lesser).

Rancho Naturalista Lodge, Costa Rica, or in the Land of Coffee and Chocolate

Now we were in Finca Tres Equis, a family cocoa farm (if I understood well, it translates as Triple X Farm) and a private reserve of over 300 hectares, of which more than 70 percent is a forest, representing part of a Jaguar corridor. At least one Boat-billed Heron awaited us in the thickets.

Finding a Cackling Goose

It was on the side of the road in a field at Blue Chip Farm, a large horse farm near the town of Wallkill. A Cackling Goose is a very small Canada Goose , or, at least, it used to be. Even if you don’t you will see remarkable variety in the Canada Geese you find and will gain new appreciation for a very common bird.
