I would be fascinating to know how many species of birds it was pointed at during its time with me, but it must have been well over 1,000. I’ve never quite understood why so many people wrap their scopes up in little jackets, (but nor do I understand why it’s so popular to dress dogs up in coats, too, as they are already wrapped in fur.

In front of us, the river is two miles wide… and it is paved with birds: smaller groups of Greater White-fronted and Greylag Geese , numerous Mute Swans and Mallards , plus Eurasian Teals , Gadwalls , Common Pochards , a few Ferruginous and Tufted Ducks , Common Goldeneyes and several Smews. Kaikoura is New Zealand’s finest birding destination, and seeing it brought low is a terrible blow. Thanks to it’s marine canyon it’s the place to see Sperm Whales, swim with Dusky Dolphins and New Zealand Fur-seals, and watch albatrosses, shearwaters and petrels. Cape Petrels aren’t rare, but are fun.

I’ve been to the Sounds before, but I had never visited them specifically to bird, which means I hadn’t seen the specialities there. New Zealand Fur-seals are the most common pinniped found in New Zealand. This trip was to rectify that. Spotted Shags are endemic to New Zealand.

As I have explained before these islands are the best place for a lot of the birding here because they are more easily protected from introduced mammals which wreck such havoc on the wildlife here. They are solitary, and their roosting habits may be the reason for their frosted fur and (relatively, for a bat) high-contrast patterns of coloration – in the open, with no safety to be had in numbers, they need to blend with lichen and break up their outlines to avoid predation during the day.
