The last time I had seen a Summer Tanager was during a Christmas Bird Count in 2012. Sightings in Trinidad have been sporadic, 38 to be exact since the formation of the T&T Bird Status and Distribution Committee. This is an immature bird, as evidenced by the yellow wash on his underparts. Amazingly, it was still there!

Within 140 ac / 60 ha of Rancho Naturalista’s Reserve, there are 500 bird species – or 55% of the nation’s total! While I already visited Costa Rica once, I do not feel overly-confident with its birds. And Verbena attracts another specialty bird and a regional endemic (from Honduras to Panama), the Snowcap.

During our three weeks in Singapore we encountered many a family of Red Junglefowl- Gallus gallus in various locations. Often the rustling of leaves would lead us to Red Junglefowl , squirrels, water monitors or small lizards. Most family groups of Red Junglefowl included around three young birds being fed by the female.

The hapless Sooty Tern ( Onychoprion fuscatus ) is the classic hurricane bird, but other pelagic species are entrained in storms and blown ashore as well, like Bridled Terns ( Onychoprion anaethetus ), White-tailed Tropicbirds ( Phaethon lepturus ), and Magnificent Frigatebirds ( Fregata magnificens ).

This is all very interesting, I’m sure you will agree, but it meant that my flight had to go the long way round and cut deep into my bird-watching time. A Palm Squirrel and a Shikra agreed to a halt in hostilities for the day. The Purple Sunbird is an elegant example of it’s family. White-breasted Kingfisher.

When it comes to a one stop shopping for food and shelter, no other plant is as widely used as the Cardon Cactus family. The Elephant Cactus , puts out a white tubular flower that open from late March, until early, June, and are visited by nectar feeding bats at night and many birds during the day. It would be a great location to visit if you only had a few hours in Singapore and wanted to go beyond the airport to go bird watching. The lodge is unusual in having a raised walkway behind the lodge, allowing those of us keen to bird or watch wildlife when most normal people are resting in the middle of the day. Along with more orangutans and diminutive Common Pygmy Squirrels, we also found a massive cobra one day! The birding was pretty ace too.

Quetzal is THE beloved, sacred bird of Guatemala and they do live there (and in southern Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama) BUT are more accessible in Costa Rica. If the birds are feeding along the road, you can just as easily find them yourself. Last weekend, I did that while guiding a trip for the Birding Club of Costa Rica.

For this reason, it offers both highland species, such as the Black-headed Siskin and White-throated Thrush , and lowland species, like the Squirrel Cuckoo and Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher.
