You might imagine this is because of pandemic restrictions, but actually, that hasn’t been a big problem, as long as I keep my birding local. As I result, January gave me my slowest start for Michoacán in four years, as far as my number of species is concerned. I missed some regulars, but they were replaced by surprise species.

Or would be, had I encountered more of them – so far, I have seen only a very small share of the approximately 233 woodpecker species, and got decent photos of an even smaller number – not much more than 10% of all of them. We had a blast, the family and I, and experienced some amazing natural places, to say nothing of the fine city of Seattle. To go by the numbers, I saw 79 species of bird while in Washington (150 county ticks), 21 of which were year birds and 8 of which were lifers. Absolutely! Would we do it again? In a heartbeat!

Strangely, the Oriental Dollarbird seems to suffer a bit from an image problem. Otherwise, why would eBird call it a “heavily built, flat-headed dark blue bird”, which sounds more like a description of a robot or a piece of machinery than that of a beautiful bird?

First I noticed a red cap – a male, then striped flanks and pale-red undertail, but couldn’t see its wing because some part of the bird remained hidden by a branch at any given time.
