The other day, Minneapolis, Minnesota passed a feral cat ordinance. So I put together a “carnival” (of sorts) of Feral Cat Ordinances and Issues that samples current events across the US. From the Star Tribune : Feral cats win a round at Minneapolis City Hall. She said she has a cat that stays indoors — unwillingly.

This was where I set up my bird feeders, just one at first, then expanding as everyone expressed delight in seeing the Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Downy Woodpeckers. October is a good month to see owls in Shanghai, where these birds are rare in most other months. They look a bit like cartoon birds, with ridiculously huge yellow eyes. In contrast, Oriental Scops Owls seem to often migrate in slightly larger groups of maybe 10 or so. Northern Boobooks are mostly found as individuals.

I was heartbroken because I thought one was orphaned but now that they travel as a group, I'm less upset. I won't try to grab them, but I look out for them and chase the stray cats away. The birds know my voice and this one beat up looking squirrel actually comes right up to me. I'm not as crazy as I sound.

Our group watching the first Snow Leopard from a knoll above our camp in Hemis National Park. The cat actually appeared almost golden in the early morning light and this time we could admire its magnificent thick, blotched pelt, extremely long tail and large head.
