It is also a good description of the birding in southernmost Florida. However, few realize how unique and how good the birding can be here. A cool climate on one side and wide expanses of water on the others creates isolation as many temperate land bird species seem unable to colonize areas south of Lake Okeechobee.

Sukau birding essentially means staying in a more-or-less comfortable lodge on the banks of the Kinatabagan river, and taking boat tours on more-or-less rickety boats on the river. So, just photos of the birds themselves. Why that makes Mr. Graydon worthy of having a bird species named after him is a mystery to me.

Bobolinks are among my favorite birds. And what kind of bird is black beneath and pale above? The Bobolink is an absurd bird and any birding outing is made better when one spots Dolichonyx oryzivorus. So far as I can tell, Bobolinks haven’t bred in Queens since the first breeding bird atlas, in the 1980s.

Most of the usual birds seem present, a frog or two call from a small wetland, and a few other expected animals are there too. We would marvel over cheery flocks of green and bright yellow Carolina Parakeets and then we would see them decline until there were just two, maybe one lonely bird, and then we would witness their forever absence.

Vultures, you see, are safe birds for smaller creatures. Zone-tailed Hawks breed in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, but they winter from Mexico to Brazil. Dark tips on the flight feathers? first appeared on 10,000 Birds. Which I find fascinating. No need to worry about a vulture, unless you are dead.

However, we have learned over the years that until a bird can fly it is not completely safe from predators. The defining features that identify it from the parents are the grey legs and the black bill tip. The fully fledged Pied Oystercatcher chick is the bird on the right. They do not attempt to breed for about seven years.

On BirdTrack, the British equivalent of e-Bird, the list of birds provided does allow for Tufted Duck x Ferruginous Duck to be recorded, but not Tufted Duck x Pochard. However, there had been reports of a Scaup mixed in with the flock, which at first glance I thought this bird might be. My hunch was Tufted Duck x Pochard.

A few weeks ago we decided to go and see if the resident Pied Oystercatchers at Eighty Mile Beach had been successful at breeding this season. In a year when we all need a good news story I am happy to report that there had been an exceptional breeding season. The bill also has a dark tip.

At some point, my stock of memories of birds seen outside of China will be used up, I am afraid. Even more than the African Grey Hornbill, they are forest birds. Each evening the shorebirds head off on their migration to breed in the Northern hemisphere. One of the birds is a juvenile from last year’s breeding and still has a dull bill tip and pale legs. They don’t have any problem with international travel, because they are “international birds”!

The bird was ringed and had been visiting regularly during the spring. The boat captain estimated that there may be 50 thousand to 1 lakh (100 thousand) birds I had no cause to doubt it (last year the Bombay Natural History Society counted 121,000). They stay until May before heading north to the Rann of Kutch to breed.

Seeing as Plumb Beach is a known stopover area for large numbers of shorebirds, a known breeding area for a variety of saltmarsh species, including Clapper Rails , and habitat for a wide variety of mammals, reptiles, insects, and other bird species, this is a long overdue move. It shares the common characteristic of white flight feathers which fold away on landing to leave a cryptically coloured bird, well suited to its preferred reedy habitat. The bill is usually greeny-yellow, tipped dark, but takes on a surprising blue for breeding, contrasting with the green skin around the eye.

Particularly off the north-eastern tip of the cigar-shaped island (Tobago’s phonetic similarity to “tobacco” is no coincidence) where the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea come to a sometimes less-than-amicable junction.
