Pied Oystercatchers breeding in Roebuck Bay

This large flock is generally the non-breeding birds and on one occasion we have observed a nest there, but we do not know the outcome of it. In recent years there have been Pied Oystercatchers attempting to breed along the shores of Roebuck Bay. Many of the migratory shorebirds still have some of their breeding plumage.

Black Kites breeding

We really don’t like the presence of Black Kites along the beach when the Pied Oystercatchers are breeding. Of course Black Kites also breed and at the moment there is a nest very close to the highway. However, I do hope they choose to scavenge at the rubbish tip rather than on the beach when they reach adulthood!

Breeding Bobolinks in Queens

In The Second Atlas of Breeding Birds in New York State one can see that only the southern tip of our southernmost borough, Staten Island, had breeding Bobolinks between 2000 and 2005. So far as I can tell, Bobolinks haven’t bred in Queens since the first breeding bird atlas, in the 1980s.

Birding Ijmuiden Pier in Late October

I’ve seen this bird many times now but I still always take my time looking at them, as even in their non-breeding plumage they look very elegant. A very elegant Arctic Tern was foraging close to the pier, the first time I saw this bird in breeding plumage.

Zone-tailed Hawks breed in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, but they winter from Mexico to Brazil. Dark tips on the flight feathers? They even tend to fly among Turkey Vultures , soaring with their wings held in the same slightly-V-shaped position. Then they drop out of the flock, and pounce. A Zone-tailed Hawk !
