The defining features that identify it from the parents are the grey legs and the black bill tip. Non-breeding Pied Oystercatchers join flocks either to the north or south of Gantheaume Point. They do not attempt to breed for about seven years. They moved around a bit to get comfortable on the rocky outcrop.

A few weeks ago we decided to go and see if the resident Pied Oystercatchers at Eighty Mile Beach had been successful at breeding this season. In a year when we all need a good news story I am happy to report that there had been an exceptional breeding season. The bill also has a dark tip.

Lesser Scaup has only a slight black tip to the beak, while this bird had a clear black band. One year he was very excited when his female Hawaiian Goose hatched four healthy goslings, the first time he had managed to breed this species. My hunch was Tufted Duck x Pochard.

But at times, in the breeding season especially, the same birds would belt some of the most complex and absolutely juicy notes that made me reconsider my feelings toward them. It may seem like a grown bird, but the rufous tips on the wing coverts of this Cocoa Thrush tell us it is still in its first year of life. Wise creatures.

Each evening the shorebirds head off on their migration to breed in the Northern hemisphere. One of the birds is a juvenile from last year’s breeding and still has a dull bill tip and pale legs. Migration is in full swing here in Broome and Roebuck Bay is starting to empty out.

Bohemian Waxwing The morning of my second day was partly devoted to a Long-tailed Duck in the Mokbaai at the island’s southern tip. I’m was very happy with this sighting, but noticed that these birds never seem to be males in their attractive non-breeding plumage, the main image you recall from the bird guides.

Its pale, dark-tipped bill and light eyes contrast against the dark bill and red eyes of the Lesser Flamingo. There is no doubting that an airborne flock of pink, leggy birds is worth a good tip and it gave me cause to wonder if my captain was just slightly slow in throttling back as we approached another flock and they took flight also.

Seeing as Plumb Beach is a known stopover area for large numbers of shorebirds, a known breeding area for a variety of saltmarsh species, including Clapper Rails , and habitat for a wide variety of mammals, reptiles, insects, and other bird species, this is a long overdue move. I assumed it to be some kind of domestic breed or an escapee and didn’t pay it much attention. It has pink legs and its bill is orange with pink on the upper mandible, towards the tip. What kind of a weird goose is this? I first noticed it 3 seasons ago when it showed up in a local farmer’s sheep field.

They are very easy to identify in-flight with black and white plumage and flappy action with broad-tipped wings. The numbers are augmented during the winter, when the population increases by nearly 4 times, but the species is still on the red list after the breeding population has plummeted over recent years.

They have an extremely long bill, that is two toned, showing a darken tip all year round. The Bill will have a blue gray base during the breeding season. This blueish-gray bird has a bright white belly, and white stripe that runs up the front of the neck. The wings show the bright white underwing coverts and belly when in flight.
