Set in an abandoned oil refinery where wildlife is slowly regaining control save for the desperate attempts of golfers to retain all eighteen holes, industrial ghosts loom over rolling freshwater lakes bordered by fifty foot tall trees. The subtle white edging to the gape of this bird indicates it is near breeding time.

I have observed this species many times (my eBird says 28 times this year alone) and never had one landing near me. Nowadays, it has a feeling of an abandoned construction site. Hidden from my view, it stood on a nearby tree and if it weren’t for those clumsy beats, I wouldn’t have noticed it.

It was photographed by Alan Mart and the bird later took off not to be refound. When I arrived on the side of the proper road in Pittstown it was pretty easy to figure out where the bird was. The Brown Pelican and the Peruvian Pelican are closely related and once were considered the same species. The plight of pelicans, raptors, and other species led to a ban on DDT in 1972 and a reduction in endrin use, allowing pelican numbers to rise. The Brown Pelican is Louisiana’s state bird.

These breeding colonies included other species of flamingos, but it was only the Andean Flamingo that appeared to have been the most affected, if indeed the egg extraction was one of the causes that led to the Andean Flamingo’s population decline.
