Hongbenghe is a very small village in Yunnan, right next to the border with Myanmar. The main attraction for birders here are the hornbills – I have written about them before , so this post will be more on the other birds I saw there in 2017. A late Nashville Warbler , an Orange-crowned Warbler , and a bunch of dabbling ducks were some of his top species. Corey saw some decent birds this weekend but nothing that really astounded.

In Costa Rica, we did our part and were elated to finish with more than 640 species. Keel-billed Toucan , one of three toucan species seen during our day of birding. Overhead, we got our first species in the form of a calling Black-bellied Whistling-Duck. The weather kept cooperating but it was another story for the birds.

Four very experienced birders walked right past this potentially dangerous living sculpture of a snake during the Arenal Christmas Count. We have to be careful about staying hydrated in hot, humid conditions, and keeping with the patience needed to find Bare-necked Umbrellabird, Sharpbill , or other rare and challenging species.

Birdlife South Africa has previously done two of these types of trips before, previously called Flock to Sea – Namibia in 2013 and Flock to Nowhere in 2017, in partnership with MSC Cruises. I learned of the trip right as it had been delayed and made a vow that I would be on that ship. The cruise staff seemed utterly confused by us.

With its striking combination of colour rings I suspected that it would be easy to find out more about this particular bird, and I was right. They are of the race islandica , a sub species of the nominate race, limosa. Rings are not the only way of marking birds, and with a number of species wing tags are more often used.

In the fall of 2017, my mother and favorite birding buddy visited the mountains of Montana for a fishing trip. Upon returning, she raved about her new favorite species: the Clark’s Nutcracker. After a very good Wet Season with substantially more rain than normal over the first few months of 2017 the land was flooded and a huge variety of birds arrived in the Broome area to take advantage of the ideal conditions for breeding. In fact, we saw two species of monkey, our only sloths, lots of coatis, and my rarest ever mammal sighting—a Jaguarundi —right on site. Yes, that’s Panama City to the right.
