We have found a spot that is right at the place where a very large arroyo meets up with the Sea of Cortez. Even when scouring the sandy desert floor, looking for seeds and what not, they would scratch and bounce they way right up to me. This allows me to see frigates, boobies, terns and pelicans on the saltwater side.

A female Ring-necked Pheasant made a run from one clump of vegetation to the next, fortunately going right through Corey’s field-of-view. Corey enjoyed some more slow-paced-puddle-birding again this weekend and saw a surprise visitor run past the puddle while he was digiscoping from his car in the dune scrub at Rockaway Beach.

This rare bird for Costa Rica was a fine surprise and stood right out in the open but we had to ignore it to keep up with the Crimson-fronted and Olive-throated Parakeets that flew overhead, the toucans and trogons calling in the trees, and other expected species that made themselves known.

Hongbenghe is a very small village in Yunnan, right next to the border with Myanmar. The main attraction for birders here are the hornbills – I have written about them before , so this post will be more on the other birds I saw there in 2017. One road simply ends here, giving the place a real end-of-the-world feeling.

With its striking combination of colour rings I suspected that it would be easy to find out more about this particular bird, and I was right. After being ringed my godwit (EY70 137) wasn’t seen again until 1 July 2017, when it was reported from Aldeburgh Town Marshes, not far from where it was first ringed.
