Here’s hoping that 2017 is a much better year than 2016! All of 2016 only netted me one new species for Queens, a Greater White-fronted Goose. I will see at least 500 species for the year. So having reached 500 or more species in six of the last ten years makes me confident I can do it again. That really sucks.

With only a few more days left, 2017 was coming to a close. Birdwise, it turned out to be a good one and my year list was almost 400 species long, which made me happy… almost. Too short-tailed to be a kestrel, it’s a Merlin and the species #400 in barely more than an hour on my first morning at the Kerkini lake! The solution?

In 2021, the American Ornithological Society announced that it has now classified the Bahama Nuthatch as a distinct species, Sitta insularis. A 1931 daily newspaper article (likely from The Philadelphia Bulletin) reported that Bond “brought back thirty species of birds never before represented in the Academy’s collections.

When you mention “Africa” to a birder, it is likely that at least two thirds will instantly think “Kenya”, and for a good reason: it is home to over 1,060 bird species and boasts many globally important birding areas. Each site gets from 2 to 5 pages (but mostly 3-4). Endemics are indicated with a bracket “(E)”.

Carrie answered the question in a 2017 post , stating that “In general, the Europeans of yore assigned the common name ‘rail’ to members of the family with longer bills and ‘crake’ to the birds with stubby ones.” Anyway, it seems to work reasonably well for the two species I saw here.

The species is only in the north of Australia and they are often found in locations that are hard to get to year round. We have been able to observe Purple-crowned Fairy-wrens in a few locations across the north of Australia and they were quite easy to see in the car-park at Big Horse Creek in 2017.

One of my favorite bird species living by my house is the Juniper Titmouse. In 2017, my neighborhood, Aldea de Santa Fe, began a Juniper Titmouse Nesting Box Project in collaboration with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s NestWatch Program. A total of 79 fledged, which beat our 2017 count of 52.

It is only in recent years that the White-quilled Honeyeater became a separate species from the Blue-faced Honeyeater. eBird mentioned the changes in August 2017. The White-quilled Honeyeaters really can’t be mistaken for any other species. The colours of the White-quilled Honeyeater are also a stand-out feature.

In 2017 the arrival of the Magpie Geese warned us of the high rainfall ahead and then they bred in the area. The highway divides a huge expanse of flooded land and numerous bird species have bred in the area over recent weeks. The Magpie Geese bred again in the Broome area during 2018.

Australian Magpies are a species that most people are familiar with, but often for the wrong reasons. Their plumage varies throughout Australia, but due to their size they are hard to mistake for another bird species. In a bit of fun Australian Magpies won the Bird of the Year title in 2017.

A bird species battling an onslaught of invasive rats just got a glimpse of hope. While this is happy news for any parents, and wonderful news for any threatened species (these Pipits live only on Antarctica’s South Georgia Island and number only 3,000-4,000 pairs), it’s tremendous news for those trying to eradicate rats from the island.

Corey had a host of birds to choose from for his Best Bird of the Weekend seeing as he did a big day on Saturday that netted 123 species. I was thrilled this weekend to see a bird I haven’t encountered in nearly a decade; maybe American Pipit is common in your parts, but I had to scour the East Spit of Braddock Bay to luck into one.

It could have been any of those from among the over 100 species that crossed Corey’s path this weekend but of them all he chose the singing Henslow’s Sparrow at the Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge as this state-threatened species is hard to see and it gave Corey the best looks he ever had of the species.

I was excited to bring my daughter Ivy to see her first Sandhill Cranes , a rare but abiding species for Monroe County, NY. Sure, it’s an introduced species, but seeing a female pheasant so well is a treat! But the advancement of the season does signal shifts in bird behavior, which is, in itself, pretty hot. In Costa Rica, we did our part and were elated to finish with more than 640 species. Keel-billed Toucan , one of three toucan species seen during our day of birding. Overhead, we got our first species in the form of a calling Black-bellied Whistling-Duck. The weather kept cooperating but it was another story for the birds.

Rochester is still wintry, but bird activity among the common species has picked up quite a bit. Your first weekend of spring or fall may have been uneventful in terms of birds, but pace yourself. We still have months of blissful migration ahead of us! My best sighting was a Hairy Woodpecker puffed up to fight the cold.

Just last year, 5 new bird species and 5 new subspecies were discovered in a few short weeks of fieldwork on the islands of Taliabu, Peleng and Batudaka.
